The Centre at Tooting Bec has a new name!
From January 1st 2012 the Centre – formerly called the Christian Education Centre – is now called the Centre for Catholic Formation. The Archbishop has approved the change.

The name has been changed because
- The Centre used to have responsibility for advising in schools, but this work is now located in the Archdiocesan Schools’ Commission: the word ‘education’ in our title caused confusion between the two agencies
- The remit of this Centre is lay formation, and it seems better to include ‘formation’ in our title
- Including ‘Catholic’ makes it much clearer who we are and what we are about
We also have a new subtitle, or strapline: Evangelization and Catechesis in the Mission of the Church. Assisting priests and parishes in their continuing work of catechesis – passing on the faith from one generation to another – is a major part of our work. As the Church gets to grips with the “New Evangelization” this will become an increasing part of our work as well.
In short, the Centre exists to assists everyone in the Archdiocese of Southwark to catechise and evangelise, by deepening the formation of all the lay people in the various parishes.
Mission Statement
The Centre for Catholic Formation is the Diocesan Agency appointed by the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Southwark for the promotion and provision of adult faith formation. We are a resource at the service of the people and clergy of our diocese. Together in mission we are inspired by the Gospel vision and the living tradition of the Church.
